An organization of sanctioned magi who enforce strict codes of conduct on arcane magic use. Magi who refuse to follow the tenets of the Arcanum are branded as rogue magi and either imprisoned or executed. The Arcanum formed in the early days of the Centemplum faith when all magi were hunted by the church. By policing themselves, these magi hoped to prevent needless slaughter. For centuries now, the Arcanum has succeeded in controlling most of Myria’s arcane users with the exception of a small number of independent rogue magi.
Today, the Arcanum routinely tests young children for the traits which indicate arcane aptitudes. When such a child is found, they are taken away to one of several Arcanum controlled strongholds throughout Myria where they are raised and taught to safely control their powers. Once they are old enough and have demonstrated that they live by the tenets of the organization, they are officially sanctioned. From that point on, the Arcanum dictates what jobs and professions the magus may take. Any signs of deviance on the part of the magus are observed closely by the Arcanum and should an individual be found practicing forbidden arts, swordmages are quickly dispatched to capture or eliminate the transgressor.
