A realm of sublime dreams and soul-rending nightmares, the Nether is an ethereal reality that bends and shapes itself to any will that acts upon it. While separate from the mortal realm, the Nether is also inextricably linked with it. All living things, great and small possess a link to the Nether for it is the spark of this realm that ignites all life. The Nether is where mortals ascend when they dream and it is where their spirits go when they die. And it is from here that all magic flows in one form or another back into the mortal world.
The boundary between the two realities prevents physical contact between the realms except for the most rare portal or intersection between the planes. While less difficult and far less dangerous, spiritual travel into the Nether, outside of the occasional dream, is still a difficult task for any but the most practiced of Magi. This is fortunate for most because the Nether can be a cruel and dangerous place for the unwary or unprotected.
Due to its infinitely malleable nature, parts of the Nether can range from the seemingly mundane to the unbelievably fantastic, from an exact replica of a city street replete with normal townsfolk to a beautiful crystalline palace inhabited by malicious beings of swirling energy that imprison their prey within their translucent walls. While a traveler of the Nether might encounter many inhabitants who are little more than the echoing reflections of their own will, they might also encounter beings with wills of their own who shape reality to satisfy their own, sometimes alien, desires. The Gods make their desmenses within the Nether while lesser entities navigate its boundless depths. Many of these spirits hold little concern for the fragile mortal psyches that sometimes intrude upon their domain, while others take an unhealthy interest in mortals who happen to venture too deep.
